The Psychological Effects of Bullying On Teens in America - Oct 14,2012

The subject of “bullying” has been gaining momentum, replacing a nonchalant attitude driven by a nonchalant label. Evidence emerges on the psychological front that bullying has lasting, debilitating effects on mental health and self-image, as evidenced by a surge in eating disorders, body dysmorphia, and suicides. Bullied children often spend their adulthoods casting themselves in similar roles, perpetuating the cycle. The National Youth Violence Prevention Resources Center and The Health Resources and Services Administration reports that 15% to 25% of students in the U.S. are bullied. US bullying behavior has seen a 5% increase. Children who are obese, gay, or have disabilities are at a 63% increased risk. Bullied children as well as their aggressors are more likely to be experiencing family dysfunction, domestic violence, conduct and personality disorders, and criminal conduct than the general school population. Bullying magnifies these genetic and environmental predisposing risk factors.

Cape Vincent and Block Island - Oct 14,2012

WWR returns to the Thousand Islands region in New York. We will air the full interview with Donna Essegian and Hester Chase from Cape Vincent. We will get the scoop on BPs efforts to overrule the communitys desire to avoid the industrialization of their town. We will also hear about the losers who were kicked out of office and have begun a lawsuit against two prominent bloggers and the folks posting comments on the blogs. The race is on to see which state will be the first to destroy a portion of their marine environment (and jack up their electricity costs) by installing off-shore wind turbines. Massachusetts has been pursuing this madness for over ten years with the so-called "Cape Wind" project. Despite efforts by the Obama administration to fast track this wind-fracking of the ocean -- they have not yet started construction. Rhode Island is slobbering over the possibility that they will be first with a 6-turbine test project just off the coast of Block Island. We will be talking to Rosemarie Ives about the situation. Rosemarie Ives is the former mayor of Redmond, Washington, former chairwoman of the Sustainable Development Task Force for the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and initial signatory of the Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement. As Redmonds mayor, Ms. Ives devoted much of her efforts to preserving residential neighborhoods, open space, and stewardship of the environment. Before election as mayor, Ms. Ives served on the City Council for four years and on the Planning Commission for five years. Originally from Stamford, Connecticut, she received a B.A. in history from Annhurst College, an M.S. in secondary education from the University of Bridgeport. She is a part-time resident of Block Island, living in a "cottage" that has been in her family for decades.

A New Way To Be Human Guest Robert V Taylor - Oct 14,2012

Our very special guest this week is Robert V. Taylor, a nationally recognized leader, author, and sought-after speaker and media commentator. He is absolutely passionate about helping individuals and organizations to realize their full human potential and impact in the world—and has invested a lifetime in doing just that. Born and raised in South Africa, Robert saw firsthand the difference that could be made when oppressed people are given the freedom to discover their voices, trust their imaginations, and find the courage to be who they are. These experiences deeply empowered him, transforming his life. As a young adult, Robert worked tirelessly to end apartheid. In 1980 his mentor, Archbishop Desmond Tutu sent Robert to the United States to avoid imprisonment for his anti-apartheid activity. He graduated from Rhodes University, South Africa, and completed graduate work at Union Theological Seminary, New York, eventually becoming the highest-ranking openly gay clergy person in the Episcopal church at the time. Robert lives by his own belief that goodness and kindness are possible each day as we show up for life. He continues to explore integrating personal spirituality and values-driven strategies with the question of how we each leave a footprint of compassion in the world—both at home, and in the corporate marketplace. His book, A New Way to Be Human: 7 Spiritual Pathways to Becoming Fully Alive (New Page Books, April 2012)offers a path to an integrated life of purpose. More information about Robert and his work can be found at robertvtaylor.com. Make sure you catch this show!

How To Help Your Pet Heal With Flower Essences - Oct 15,2012

Millions of physically fit and healthy animal companions are unnecessarily put to death every year to give their human companions peace and quiet from their behavior and emotional issues which can include aggression, excessive noisiness from barking, unruliness, incontinence, inability to get along with other family pets, possessiveness, jealousy, spraying and separation anxiety. Unresolved behavior issues are one of the main reasons animals are surrendered to the SPCA, Humane Society or Animal Services. They find themselves homeless, and the consequent price of animal suffering, cost of human regrets and welfare services are incalculable. Euthanasia for behavior problems is considered a treatment for many people and happens countless times a day. Fortunately, there is an inexpensive solution that can correct the behavior issue and reduce the overall suffering. In all parts of the world since the earliest times, flowering trees, shrubs and herbs have been used for healing purposes. All parts of the plant have been used. Flowers, the crowning glory of plants, have been considered to embody the fundamental nature or essential character of the plant and to have particular healing powers. They are very important in the treatment of animals because they can restore the balance and harmony of an animal's true nature. They are safe, non-toxic and can be used in conjunction with other forms of treatment. They are gentle and inexpensive to use. But how do they work? Are they effective? Is it permanent? In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, wildlife advocate and expert, Laura Lassiter will discuss how flower essences can help heal behavior issues, emotions in animals and their influence on behavior, the principles of flower remedies and their suitability for use in the treatment of animals and recommended flower essences for specific behavior patterns.
